Role: Mechanical Engineer - Diesel Engines

Location: Matosinhos, Porto

Type of contract: permanent, full-time

Carrier is the leading worldwide provider of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), refrigeration, fire, security, and cold chain solutions. We invented the modern air conditioning, and our team of pioneers and innovators have a long history of developing new technologies.

WHO WE ARE

Addvolt is a technology powerhouse belonging to Carrier group, with a mission to make the goods transportation cleaner and quieter. We have developed and offer the World’s 1st plug-in hybrid system for refrigerated transport. With our technology, refrigerated trucks perform cold operation in electric mode, with reduced level of noise, and no-emissions.

Addvolt business unit creates high and positive impact on the drivers' quality of life, while it contributes to having eco-friendly vehicles. Our customers are at the heart of every innovation that we make. They are the innovators. With our partners is always a learning opportunity. Work with us is being a part of a big team driven to execute and deliver the future of transport today.

WE ARE LOOKING FOR

Addvolt is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Mechanical Engineer – Diesel Engines to join our Systems & Application team. The ideal candidate will support the mechanical development, integration and validation of diesel-engine power sources and hybrid architectures for transport refrigeration applications.

The role will contribute to a hybrid and diesel concept and build on learning from a proof of concept. It combines diesel-engine integration, mechanical design, performance assessment and validation, with close collaboration across system architecture, controls, electrical integration, testing, suppliers and Carrier engineering teams.

We are looking for a practical and analytical engineer who understands internal-combustion-engine systems and wants to apply that knowledge to efficient hybrid operating concepts and the transition towards lower-emission transport refrigeration.

As a Diesel Mechanical Engineer, you will:

  • Support the development and integration of diesel-engine power-source concepts for transport refrigeration platforms, including conventional and hybrid architectures.
  • Define mechanical and thermal requirements for diesel engines and associated subsystems, including mounting, cooling, air intake, exhaust, fuel, lubrication and service interfaces.
  • Develop and review mechanical layouts, brackets, interfaces and installation concepts for engines, generators and related components.
  • Assess engine and power-generation performance, fuel consumption, efficiency, operating points, durability and thermal behaviour using test and field data.
  • Support the evaluation and selection of diesel-engine and power-generation solutions based on performance, efficiency, reliability, cost and regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with Systems, Electrical and Controls Engineering teams to define integrated powertrain architectures, operating strategies and subsystem interfaces.
  • Support the continuous improvement of hybrid power-generation architectures through analysis of test results, field data and product-performance feedback.
  • Lead or support root-cause analysis for engine, generator, mechanical integration, vibration, thermal or durability issues.
  • Perform or coordinate mechanical calculations, tolerance analysis, structural assessments and design-verification activities.
  • Support supplier technical reviews, component selection, prototype builds, design releases and engineering-change processes.
  • Contribute to system and design FMEA activities and ensure that safety, reliability, serviceability and regulatory requirements are addressed.
  • Create and maintain technical specifications, drawings, test plans, validation reports, installation documentation and lessons learned.

CANDIDATE VALUES AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Energy Engineering or a related field.
  • 3-5+ years of experience in diesel-engine integration, powertrain engineering, power generation, rotating machinery or related fields like off-highway vehicles or Gensets.
  • Strong knowledge of internal-combustion engines and associated mechanical, thermal and auxiliary systems.
  • Understanding of generator systems, auxiliary power units and mobile energy systems.
  • Experience interpreting engine performance maps and fuel-consumption data.
  • Knowledge of cooling-package design and thermal management.
  • Experience with mechanical design and 3D CAD. Creo is preferred.
  • Experience with engine or powertrain testing, performance analysis, instrumentation and validation.
  • Strong analytical and structured problem-solving skills, including root-cause analysis.
  • Ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary and international teams, suppliers and external partners.
  • Fluent English, written and spoken.

Nice to have:

  • Experience in transport refrigeration, commercial vehicles, trailers, generator sets or mobile power systems.
  • Experience in hybrid power-generation systems, electrified auxiliaries or energy-storage integration.
  • Knowledge of engine maps, brake-specific fuel consumption, generator efficiency and energy-management trade-offs.
  • Experience with dynamometer testing, data acquisition and engineering-analysis tools.
  • Knowledge of  vibration, fatigue, structural analysis or finite-element analysis.
  • Familiarity with diesel-engine emissions, machinery safety and applicable transport or environmental requirements.
  • Experience with PLM and configuration-management tools, preferably Windchill.

WHY ADDVOLT

  • Addvolt is poised for explosive growth in the emerging intelligent transportation space;
  • Individuals who shine and exceed expectations will be given all the opportunities of any employee at Addvolt;
  • To be part of an ever-growing team where your work can have a huge impact;
  • Work towards a greener and more sustainable future with quieter and cleaner city centers;
  • Pick, prototype and explore emerging technologies and follow its implementation and growth in scaling a product worldwide;
  • Access to professional development workshops from high-quality industry partners;
  • Flexible work hours.
