About This Role:

The Carrier Product Safety Engineer plays an important role in new product development, and the growth of the Product Safety culture in the organization.  This position is a part of the Engineering team tasked with ensuring the product meets safety standards.  The Product Safety Engineer will have the opportunity to work on all aspects of the product from supporting new product development, Legacy product support activities, as well as interacting with our Dealers and end users. This will require working in a cross-functional environment which includes communicating with other Engineers, both at factory and the New Product Development (NPD) Teams.

The right candidate for this role must possess a strong Electrical background, thrive in a fast-paced environment, have a passion for Product Safety, and enjoy root cause analysis. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Key functions of the position include coordination of New Product Development (NPD), product safety risk management and promoting a product safety culture.  Key skills include communication, organization, and project/task management.  Engagement with leadership, engineering, quality, supply chain, manufacturing and field personnel is necessary to ensure the value stream resolves potential product safety issues timely and proactively supports product safety critical activities. 

The Product Safety Engineer will have responsibility for the following:

  • New Product Development Product Safety.

  • Provide oversight, training, and leadership to cross functional teams for product safety deliverables (including Safety FMEA, Safety Review and Hazard Assessments, new technology safety assessments) and product safety reviews to ensure potential safety risks are identified and mitigated prior to launch.

  • Partner with quality and operations to ensure processes are certified, and controls are in place to monitor critical to safety characteristics.  Monitor performance on a regular cadence and engage with Ops if the process is out of control.

QA Escapes on new product (Supplier, Ops and Customer):

  • Participate in initial investigation / triage meeting(s).

  • Determine if product with issue has left Carrier control.

  • Evaluate issue to determine if it meets potential product safety issue criteria and requires reporting.

Change Management:

  • Review changes that require product safety evaluation and signature.

  • Review drawings, models and production systems to DFFP and product safety requirements.

Product Safety Officer Support:

  • Promote a product safety culture including reporting processes for potential product safety concerns.

  • Developing test plans to support risk assessments and mistake proof solutions for potential proactive and reactive product safety concerns.

  • Engage with cross functional RRCA teams to drive the activities required to close an investigation and/or complete field actions.

You Must Have:

  • Bachelors of Science or Masters in Engineering

  • 5+ years of Electrical work experience

  • Proven ability to implement lessons learned continuous improvements and standardize processes.

  • Proven ability to influence and work effectively across all levels of the organization.

  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail and ability to prioritize.

  • Strong interpersonal communication skills and a successful track record, both written and verbal across a wide audience.

  • Outstanding follow-up and follow-through skills.

  • Self-starter with ability to learn quickly and work independently.

  • Proficient with MS Office Suite.

  • Knowledge of and experience with DFMEA/SFMEA principles as related to product safety and root cause/ risk assessment (preferred skill).

  • Location: Athens, GA

  • Travel: Travel up to 15% nationally or internationally may be required.
