About this role

As a Journeyman with Carrier, you will uniquely impact our customers, becoming the face of the confidence we stand by while ensuring their comfort. Your knowledge of Commercial HVAC will be critical in working on a variety of installations, repairs, and maintenance projects. Chances to work independently and as a team will highlight your ability to both collaborate and individually make on-the-job decisions. Key Responsibilities:

  • Inspect air-conditioning units to ensure efficient operation
  • Perform regularly scheduled maintenance on heating and cooling units
  • Diagnose mechanical and electrical malfunctions
  • Install, replace, or repair damaged equipment; calibrate thermostatic controls
  • Install new heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems; repair and replace damaged or worn heating, ventilation and air-conditioning parts and equipment; repair or replace low- and high-pressure liquid lines.
  • Inspect and observe pressure of liquids and vapor with instrumentation to ensure efficient operation of unit and make necessary adjustment; inspect and service refrigeration equipment including refrigerators, ice machines, gas packs, and heat pumps
  • Maintain the chilled and hot water supply systems
  • Adjust and maintain internal electrical and electronic control systems; cleans coils, blowers, checks motors, and belt tensions
  • Assemble and install metal ductwork
  • Assist in planning and designing of new installations of heating and air-conditioning systems
  • Maintain maintenance records as required by City, State, and EPA regulations
  • Performs additional duties and responsibilities as required
  • Recognize and identify potential risks and hazards associated with performing all work-related duties safely
  • Work to mitigate potential risks associated with essential duties
  • Collaborate with management personnel to maintain safe working environments
  • Participate in a comprehensive OSHA-approved safety course (preferably an OSHA 10- or 30-hour course) and adhere to company and regulatory compliance programs
  • Obtain or carry low-voltage electrical card
  • Obtain or carry an EPA refrigerant license
  • Wear an appropriate company issued uniform
  • Obtain or carry any needed mechanical licenses for city or state work performed
  • Interpret building codes and regulations as they relate to HVAC
  • Properly install refrigerant compressors
  • Diagnose problems and make recommendations
  • Make estimates of materials required
  • Repair and replace damaged parts and equipment
  • Read blueprints, floor plans and wiring diagrams
  • Read and interpret City, State, and EPA regulations
  • Work independently in the absence of supervision
  • Work closely with colleagues as part of an integrated team
  • Follow standard processes to accomplish tasks
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Work at various changing work areas including elevated heights, on ladders/platforms
  • Safely operate company vehicles, machinery, and equipment
  • Recognize safety hazards commonly found in HVAC operations, and identify and implement appropriate controls to ensure safe work
  • Identify situations that require escalation or elevation to Supervisor or Manager for guidance or need to request additional support
  • Provide knowledge and train apprentices and newly assigned technicians
  • Competent in the proper use of hand and electrical tools
  • Possess basic knowledge of computers and cell phone apps
  • Able to rig and properly set up gantry for safely lifting equipment, overhauling pumps, chillers, etc.
  • Understand the proper and safe use of chain blocks, rigging straps, and trolleys

Basic Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • 5+ years of working experience in the HVAC Industry
  • Ability to pass a satisfactory examination, confirming skills and ability as a Building Trades Journeyman, conducted by a Union Examining Board

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of the following:
  • Principles and practices of Heating, Venting, Air Conditioning (HVAC) maintenance and repair; hazard and safety practices common to the trade
  • HVAC controls and safety devices; appropriate Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) / chemical usages; tools of the trade; materials and refrigerant recovery equipment and procedures used in installing, repairing, and maintaining HVAC systems
  • Computerized electrical circuits and systems as they relate to air-conditioning, heating, ventilating, and refrigerated cooling
  • Sheet metal, electrical, plumbing
  • Basic understanding of building automation controls
