Role Description

The FinOps Engineer drives financial accountability and cost optimization across Carrier’s cloud environments by combining technical expertise with financial insight. This role builds automation, dashboards, and governance controls that enhance visibility into cloud spend and enable teams to make informed, data-driven decisions. The role also provides implementation leadership across product and platform teams, sets standards for how FinOps is executed, and owns measurable FinOps practice outcomes (e.g., cost optimization results, tagging/allocation coverage, forecasting accuracy, and governance adoption). Working closely with Cloud Governance, Finance, and Engineering teams, the FinOps Engineer ensures efficient use of AWS, Azure, and GCP resources through proactive optimization, standardized tagging, and automated reporting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain automation and analytics that track, forecast, and optimize cloud spend across AWS, Azure, and GCP.
  • Develop dashboards and reports using Apptio and custom data pipelines.
  • Implement tagging standards, cost allocation models, and budget guardrails in collaboration with Governance teams.
  • Automate identification and remediation of cost anomalies, idle resources, and underutilized assets.
  • Own delivery of FinOps initiatives end-to-end (discovery, design, implementation, rollout, and operationalization), including defining success metrics and tracking outcomes.
  • Lead implementation of FinOps governance at scale, including guardrails, policy-as-code patterns, exception workflows, and continuous improvement cycles.
  • Partner with Finance and Product teams to establish showback and chargeback models aligned to business segments and projects.
  • Set and maintain enterprise FinOps standards (tagging, allocation, anomaly management, rate optimization, unit economics) and ensure adoption across engineering teams.
  • Build and mature enterprise FinOps playbooks, KPIs, and operating rhythms (e.g., reviews, optimization sprints) that improve cost accountability across the organization.
  • Provide recommendations on pricing models, reserved instances, savings plans, and committed use discounts to maximize efficiency; partner with teams to execute and verify realized savings.

Required Qualifications

  • 15+ years of experience in cloud cost optimization, platform governance, cloud engineering, or related roles, with demonstrated ownership of initiatives from design through adoption.
  • Strong working knowledge of at least two Cloud Providers (AWS, GCP, and/or Azure) billing, cost management, and tagging frameworks.
  • Hands-on experience with automation using Cloud Custodian, Terraform, Python, or similar scripting tools.
  • Experience with cloud reporting and visualization tools (e.g., Apptio Cloudability, Cost Explorer, Looker Studio, Power BI) and building repeatable executive-ready reporting.
  • Strong understanding of FinOps principles and lifecycle (Inform, Optimize, Operate) and how to operationalize them across multiple teams.
  • Proven ability to influence without authority and lead cross-functional implementation with Finance, Governance, and Engineering stakeholders.
  • Ability to analyze large datasets and present insights clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders, including recommendations tied to measurable outcomes.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified FinOps Practitioner or higher or equivalent experience.
  • Experience leading or scaling a FinOps program/practice, including operating cadences, KPI definitions, and stakeholder governance.
  • Experience building automated cost optimization workflows, self-service tooling, or bots.
  • Familiarity with multi-account governance models (AWS Control Tower, Azure Management Groups, GCP Resource Hierarchy).
  • Exposure to ServiceNow or other ITFM (IT Financial Management) integration tools.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to bridge technical, financial, and operational discussions, including presenting to senior leadership.
