Description
The Sr. Technical Writer works as part of multiple remote teams to document digital products and services. In this role, you will partner with product managers, technical product owners, solution architects, developers, and other technical writers to deliver high quality internal customer-facing technical documentation at every level from the granular “how to use it” README files to the high-level, knowledgebase overviews - all while making sure to connect the dots across the existing documentation.
Your documentation will enable our internal, Digital Foundry teams to better understand and extend platform services. External teams across the enterprise will also consume the documentation to independently leverage platform services to satisfy their unique application needs.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Work with product managers, solution architects, and developers to collect requirements, create, review, revise, and maintain technical documentation where the primary audience is other developers. Types of documentation may include:
- Software, systems engineering, system operations, and testing documentation
- Procedural and technical documentation for technical users
- Partner with developers to make sure the documentation you are producing is consistent with documentation being produced by other developers and all applicable documentation is updated.
- Partner with Product and other technical writers to create and maintain templates for written documentation produced by others, ensuring a consistent "look and feel"
- Maintain a library of application documentation, cataloging it for internal and/or external use
Key Skills
- Strong analytical, strategic, and creative problem-solving skills
- Strong organizational skills
- Strong technical aptitude - you do not need to know everything, but you must have a strong technical background for a technical writer, and you must be willing to learn, grow, and take ownership of your documentation
- Ability and willingness to keep the big documentation picture in mind so all the dots are connected, and the gaps are filled
General Qualifications
- 8+ years as a technical writer
- Editing / rewriting technical documentation for audiences at different technical levels
- Experience working on an agile software development team across remote and globally distributed teams
- Experience supporting multiple development teams and deliverables in a demanding environment with multiple competing priorities (preferably on documentation that can span multiple teams)
- Experience with industry standard tools used in software delivery, development, and documentation in the following categories: wiki, issue and project tracking, diagramming, road mapping, project management, version control software, code editors and/or IDEs
Specific Required Documentation Experience:
- Writing / editing developer documentation (preferably in a highly technical backend environment using Docs as Code).
- Experience with three or more of the following:
- Amazon Web Services (certification desired)
- Reading coding or scripting languages to understand how the system works and to validate information given to you – JavaScript / Typescript (backend development) strongly preferred.
- IoT or Edge devices and documentation (Edge preferred)
- GraphQL APIs and documentation
- REST API documentation and Swagger / Open API spec
- Experience with specific tools: Confluence (intermediate), Jira, SharePoint, Bitbucket or GitHub, Structurizr, SpectaQL, and Markdown. UML is not required but desired.
Additional Skills:
- High tolerance for ambiguity – Be flexible and willing to adapt. Our team is growing and redefining structures and ways of working as we grow
- Willingness to learn and ability to adapt - this is a progressive (forward thinking) environment
- Excellent communication - we’re all remote, so keeping in touch and being clear is necessary
- Detail oriented - you’ll need to see the big picture but also sweat the small stuff
Education & Certification:
- Bachelor’s degree in Technical Communication, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field preferred
- Master’s degree in applicable discipline preferred
